Local Model Club Raises Money for Wounded Warrior Project
Lawton’s local radio control model club, the Lawton Area Fun Flyers, recently helped raise money for the Wounded Warriors Project as part of “National Model Aviation Day” sponsored by the 175,000 member Academy of Model Aeronautics. A check for $300 was presented to the national organization by the local club.
“National Model Aviation Day” was created three years ago by the Academy of Model Aeronautics to celebrate the hobby, share it with the public, and use the day as a way to assist the Wounded Warrior Project by raising funds nation-wide. Approximately 200 chartered model clubs across the country chose to participate in the day to assist in raising funds for a full range of programs and services for this generation of injured veterans and their families.
In conjunction with this effort, the Lawton Area Fun Flyers hosted their annual “Wingz-n-Dawgz” cook-out and fun fly, inviting area clubs and modelers to participate in a day of flying activities and a noon-time barbecue grilled by barbecue chef Ken Reitsma of Wichita Falls. Informal competition events like “Okie Bowling” and a loop and spin contest were augmented by open flying throughout the day.
Club treasurer, Bob McFadden, organized the event, assisted by numerous other club volunteers. Club president, Ken Isaac, said the club was glad to host “Wingz-n-Dawgz” and enjoyed the day, particularly since so many Lawton Area Fun Flyers members are veterans and retired military. He said the club plans on participating in this worthwhile effort next year, also.
