As Tom Regan so aptly put it, last Saturday we held an event that could have been called “Wingz-n-Fog” given the heavy overcast and mist. Even though flying could not begin in earnest until almost 1:00, the weather did provide and opportunity for folks to visit, something that doesn’t always happen when the skies are clear and planes are in the air. Because the event had to be postponed from the previous weekend due to weather, our expected out-of-town guests were not in attendance; however, we did have an excellent representation of club members, and a great meal presided over by our BBQ Chef-in-Residence, Ken Reitsma. Ken handled all of the cooking chores as well as setting up the food line and making sure everyone had their fill. A special thanks goes to Don Haines, whose donated propane tank (stored in the trailer) let Ken cook great hamburgers, brats, and hot dogs.
One of the highlights of the day was a single competitive dice roll event that could have been called “Oh Crap!” Leonard Baker suggested and ran the exercise which consisted of competitors starting their engines (electric flyers didn’t need that edge), rolling the dice until they hit a seven, taking off, doing two loops and two rolls, landing, and then rolling the dice again until they hit a seven for the second time. Since the clock started on the first dice roll the field really leveled out, depending as much on the luck of the dice as flying skills. Matt Biga, whose flying skills are unquestionable, did not have that same relationship with Lady Luck, unfortunately.
The results were as follows:
First—Harold Anderson with a time of 1:03
Second—Kris Frost with a time of 1:10
Third—Mike Hervey with a time of 1:28
Fourth—Steve Jakubiszyn with a time of 1:29
Fifth—Clem Wehner with a time of 1:30
Sixth—Bob McFadden with a time of 1:55
Seventh—Matt Biga with a time of 2:27
In all, it was a fun day filled with great camaraderie and good flying. Thanks to all who came and participated—and a special thanks to Matt Biga who is leaving for an assignment at McConnell AFB in Wichita, KS. Matt brought to the club a great enthusiasm for flying, some memorable flight demonstrations, innovative airplanes, and a friendship that will be long remembered by LAFFS members. Matt, we wish you well!
