Wingz n Dawgz write up by Larry Kruse

As Tom Regan so aptly put it, last Saturday we held an event that could have been called “Wingz-n-Fog” given the heavy overcast and mist. Even though flying could not begin in earnest until almost 1:00, the weather did provide and opportunity for folks to visit, something that doesn’t always happen when the skies are clear and planes are in the air. Because the event had to be postponed from the previous weekend due to weather, our expected out-of-town guests were not in attendance; however, we did have an excellent representation of club members, and a great meal presided over by our BBQ Chef-in-Residence, Ken Reitsma. Ken handled all of the cooking chores as well as setting up the food line and making sure everyone had their fill. A special thanks goes to Don Haines, whose donated propane tank (stored in the trailer) let Ken cook great hamburgers, brats, and hot dogs.

Wingz – n – Dawgz 2018

It took a while for the fog and the sky to clear, but it finally did and we had some good flying weather after the excellent lunch. There are on-ground and on-board videos of the large glider tow and flight after the pictures.

Big glider towing at Elkins Field

Those who were at Elkins Field to witness the first-ever attempted big glider/big tow plane flying this morning were amply entertained. The plan was to tow Matt Biga’s 165” E-flite “Blanik”, (flown by Matt) with his equally large World Models “Clipped Wing Cub”(piloted by Harold Anderson), using a relative short tow-line.

After a semi-successful first attempt, foiled by the tow-line coming off the tow plane, the second flight was spectacular, enhanced by the smoke canisters on the 25 lb. “Blanik’s” wing tips. A blue sky would have improved the photos, but the flight couldn’t have been more successful. Excitement ramped up as the flight concluded with a bit more spoiler application than the glider needed and a smoking “Blanik” landing a bit prematurely in the tall grass at the south end of the runway.

August 18, 2018 Burger Burn

Thanks to all of the participation from LAFFS members and guests, yesterday’s “Burger Burn” was an unqualified success, with a head-count of some 35 people making their presence known during the morning. As always, Bob McFadden brought a whole trailer full of necessities and food and had things well-organized for the volunteers who helped set up, cook, and in the case of Leonard Baker, function as the official “Brat Chef”! Kudos to all who came, flew, kibitzed, and simply enjoyed themselves.

Flying today, July 7th

“Every Which Way But Loose” described more than the old Clint Eastwood movie this morning as newest LAFFS member, Matt Biga, entertained us all with the best 3D flying ever seen at Elkins Field.  With his big Hangar 9 “Extra 260” powered by a twin DLE up front, the Peanut Gallery was entertained immensely, with and without the smoke being on.  At one point as he was hovering vertically in place for an extended period of time I told him I thought his plane was stuck.  Leonard Baker brought out his venerable “Laser 200” with a DLE 35 up front for the first time in almost 20 years of being a hangar queen and it acquitted  itself well, showing lots of potential to be a mainstay of Leonard’s stable.  Also, Harold Anderson convinced Mike Mazzio, a member of the original LAFFS club, to come out and re-acquaint himself with former members and meet some of the current crop of flyers.  Welcome, Mike! In all, it was a great morning.  Thanks to all who came out.  Attached are some shots of the action.... Read More

Fourth of July Float-fly

The wind was a little higher than forecast, but a goodly group of LAFFS members had a fine start to the Fourth of July holiday today, thanks to Steve Jakubiszyn making arrangements with the VA Center for us to be there. The highlight of the morning was Matt Biga’s 83” Cessna 150, which was just majestic in all attitudes and was the focus of everyone’s attention. The accompanying photos show it as well as a sampling of some of the other planes and watercraft that showed up. While I was taking photos of some of the flyers and floaters, Harold Anderson wondered if we could capture the water droplets coming off of the floats of the big Cessna. Harold, the last photo in the array may answer that question.... Read More

May 26th Flying

Great weather and great participation from those who were there.  Also, a great big Hangar 9 deHavilland “Beaver”, spanning 110” and powered by A DLE 35RA, showed up as Bob maidened his Giant Scale plane for next weekend’s meet in Guthrie.  The plane performed perfectly, if you discount the two clicks of right aileron it took to trim the plane to a “hands-off” flight envelope.  Troops were also entertained by the two “Avanti” EDFs flown in tandem by Brent and Harold.  In all, a late Spring day to be thankful for as the heat of summer creeps closer.... Bomber flights 24-Jan-2018

For those at the club meeting last week who wondered how the transparent florescent red covering on my Lanzo Bomber would show up in the air, the answer is “pretty good”. It didn’t light up like I thought it would, but it’s still pretty visible. Intrepid LAFFers Ron Hipp, Mike Hervey, Sean Holmgren, Leonard Baker, and Tom Regan were also at the field this morning doing their thing. I estimated the wind at 6-7mph from the southeast.... 2017 Wingz-n-Dawgz

While the day started out cloudy and uncertain with light sprinkles of rain early on, it turned into arguably the best “Wingz-n-Dawgz” ever–with sunshine, partly cloudy skies and many, many flights by all 22 registered pilots by early afternoon. Electrics, gassers, scale, giant scale, 3D, and sport flights filled the skies over Elkins Field, as pilots from Amarillo and Yukon joined with LAFFS club members in a most enjoyable afternoon of flying. Out of town guests vowed to come back next year to again experience Elkins Field and the welcoming hospitality of LAFFS members. Thanks goes to all club members who came, and in particular to those who did the work under the leadership of Bob McFadden. It was an event to remember—and one to be proud of hosting.... Read More
